Poor Josie...

When we arrived home this afternoon, she was floating atop the goldfish bowl's water.  After buying the fish, we started researching goldfish on the net... a little too late.  Apparently goldfish bowls are not intended for goldfish...  ???  Yeah, someone didn't like goldfish.  I think I'm going to take Karen's suggestion and try the Betta fish...  they have a much better track record (wave record, maybe) than goldfish.

6 Reasons We Chose Goldfish

1. Goldfish don’t have to be taken on walks
2. Goldfish don’t smell
3. Goldfish don’t need to be potty trained
4. Goldfish don’t bark
5. Goldfish don’t shed
6. Goldfish don’t bite

When we told some of our friends that David and I purchased goldfish as pets, Richard asked, "What's the difference between having real goldfish and a goldfish screensaver?"  Katy chimed in to answer:  "Real ones die."

Job Update

Since my meeting on Thursday, the principal has e-mailed and told me that the other teacher was "very impressed" and thought I seemed "excited" and full of "good ideas."  She also told me that she would let me know the first week in May.  It's very nice to have a time frame!  In that same e-mail, she asked me to reply by telling her my impressions of the curriculum and feelings towards the other third grade teacher.  I've done this, and she seemed happy with my response.  It seems as if things are still looking good!  Thanks for all your prayers!

Our Weekend

Despite the fact that I have had a wonderful weekend, there’s really not much to share. We did the normal weekend stuff. The only “out of the ordinary” thing that we did this weekend was attend a Stetson baseball game. We’ve always enjoyed those, so it was nice to be able to watch the Hatters. They lost the first game, and won the second, I believe… we didn’t finish the second game of the Double Header.

I was in the nursery again this morning. The kids were quite noisy, but they were very cute! Our nursery is a very small room; when there are four or five toddlers and several babies, it is rather cramped. We have to constantly tell the toddlers to watch out for the babies, and they’re honestly not that great at the whole “watching out” thing.

A young guy was baptized this morning. He has been coming for quite a while with another new family in our church, and he trusted Jesus a couple weeks ago. He approached Bro. James telling him he wanted to be baptized. I’m glad that baptism has nothing to do with salvation; but it’s nice to see a new believer whose desire is to follow the Lord immediately!

I hope you all had a great weekend, as well. The Lord is really good, isn’t he? It’s so nice to have a good church in which to fellowship.

Who Do You Love?

Something our pastor said at church Thursday night took me back to the "courting days" of David and me.  When we were in that stage, even when we weren't together, David was constantly on my mind.  What is he doing?  Is he having a good day?  I wonder if I'll get to talk to him today?  Is he thinking about me, too?  I wonder if he's having a good time at...?  Why was David on my mind so much?  Because I loved him.  Why is he still on my mind?  Because I love him.  You think about what you love!

Now let me ask you this:  How much is Jesus on your mind?  Is he on your mind as much as your husband or fiance is or was?  We think about that "special someone" without hearing messages about him or her, without reading books about him or her, and without having him or her answer our prayers!  How much more should we have our mind turned towards Jesus! While your spouse loves you a great deal, and I'm sure you love them just as much, how much more does Jesus love us?  How much more should we love him?

I am totally "guilty" on this one!  I need to work on loving my Saviour more and more!  There certainly is a great reason to strive to love him more and more!

More Love to Thee
by Elizabeth Prentiss

More love to Thee, O Christ, more love to Thee!
Hear Thou the prayer I make on bended knee.
This is my earnest plea: More love, O Christ, to Thee;
More love to Thee, more love to Thee!

Once earthly joy I craved, sought peace and rest;
Now Thee alone I seek, give what is best.
This all my prayer shall be: More love, O Christ to Thee;
More love to Thee, more love to Thee!

Let sorrow do its work, come grief or pain;
Sweet are Thy messengers, sweet their refrain,
When they can sing with me: More love, O Christ, to Thee;
More love to Thee, more love to Thee!

Then shall my latest breath whisper Thy praise;
This be the parting cry my heart shall raise;
This still its prayer shall be: More love, O Christ to Thee;
More love to Thee, more love to Thee!

Interview Update, Funny Story, & Brown Family Addition

Interview Update:  The meeting today went well.  I spent two hours with the other third grade teacher going over the potential curriculum, behavior management stuff, and classroom routines. She made frequent references to "when we" and "you'll see next year" types of things.  Despite these clues, I don't know for sure.  The principal said hello, explained that I would be meeting with only the teacher, and said she would "call me in a day or two."  I'm hoping it's simply to work out the details.  We'll see.  I'd appreciate it if you'd keep on praying.

Funny Story:  After church tonight, several of us went to McDonald's for McFlurries.  After stealing as many of my brother's fries as he would tolerate, the girls present (myself included) decided that we wanted some fries.  So... David got a "meal," and allowed us to eat his fries. What a guy!  Anyways, the fries didn't last long (to say the least), and we were laughing about how we wanted more.  So, I had the brilliant idea that someone should go to the counter to ask for a "refill" (I didn't want to do it, mind you).  We tried to get Brianna to do it, but she said, can't we just buy more?  Shayna was up for the prank, though, so she walked up to the counter and asked "Can I get a refill please?"  She didn't seem like she was asking a question, just acting as if she wanted more Dr. Pepper.  The girl at the counter looked befuddled, and turned to a coworker and asked, "Do we give refills on fries?"  Meanwhile, our whole table erupted into uncontrollable laughter.  Then she looked at us and said, "y'all are so mean!"

Addition to the Brown Family:  David and I purchased two gold fish at Walmart tonight. The poor things haven't been given names yet, but I will update you when we do.  I'm thinking about using a "people" name for mine and David is looking for a synonym for "forgetful."

Second Meeting

In about an hour, I'll be leaving for the second meeting with the private school!  Needless to say, I'm very excited and hopeful that they will offer me the job today.  David and I have decided that if they offer it, I will accept it.  I've talked with principals and other public school personnel, and the options there are ridiculously limited right now.  They're actually firing teachers rather than hiring them.  Obviously, they are not looking good for recent graduates. They're scrambling to place tenured teachers.  Maybe it's the Lord working things out to place me where he wants me. That's what I want, the Lord's will.

Please keep praying, and hopefully there will be good news soon!

Drippy Castle, Coming Right Up

Since several people have asked how to make a drippy castle, I figured I would give a quick "how to." There are no special ingredients -- simply beach sand and water. First you need to build a mound of damp sand for a foundation. Then, you just take very wet sand, and dribble it all over the foundation. And walah (sp?), you've got a drippy castle. Sometimes, the sand is too wet and it runs too much. They key is getting sand that's the right "wetness."

Drippy castles are the best! We didn't build this one, but
all FL natives had made their share of drippy castles!

Cute now, are they not? It was a fun project for David and me!

We had a youth activity (5-12 year olds) on Friday evening.
They had a great time with this parachute.

I'm subbing in fifth grade tomorrow! Pray for me. I've not subbed in the "older" grade. I'm hoping they're not too 'tudey ('tude = attitude). It's nice to be working this much, though. Saving money is a good thing!

Photo Ramblings, 86 the Photos

Once again, I've been trying to upload pictures to no avail. It's not as if the pictures I want to share are spectacular, but it's fun to tell stories using pictures.

Anyway, David and I had a great weekend. We were able to sleep in on Saturday, then we played some tennis, and I went to the beach with some girlfriends. I haven't been to the beach in ages. Generally, David and I don't go unless it's evening -- there are far too many naked women. There is one beach that is not like the others, so we occasionally venture there.

We had a great day in the church house, even though I missed both services. During the morning service, I was in the nursery. During the evening service, David and I were teaching a missions class. I taught the 5-10 year olds, while David spoke to the older bunch. Our missionaries this month were the Dean Runyon family. They have been ministering to the people of Guyana for quite some time, and one of their neatest ministries is the scripture song ministry. The people in their church are, for the most part, illiterate. They had to find a way for these people to memorize scripture, so they have hundreds of Bible verses to catchy melodies. With the young kids, I talked about the importance of the word of God in our lives. We talked about how singing songs is one way to memorize scripture. David used the music as a venue to talk about what types of music we should be listening to. Colossians 3:16 is a great verse on that topic. I don't think the young people realize how much what they listen to affects their lives.

Dean and Patty Runyon are in the States on furlough right now, so a recent graduate from the DeLand School of the Bible is taking care of their church and ministries. I just received an update via e-mail, and Bro. Buck's doing great. I think he's got the "missionary bug" very badly and will have a tough time coming back home. He loves those people!

Check out the Runyon's website! You can even listen to a few of their scripture songs.

Try, Try Again... Tomorrow

I've been trying to upload pictures for quite some time, but it's grow  so late, I'm giving up.  I have to substitute at 7:30 tomorrow morning, and I don't want to be sleepy.  We had a great day in the church house.  God is so good!  I have pictures & stories to share.  Lord willing, those will get up tomorrow!

Quick Update

The funeral:  the gospel was given, but it certainly wasn't given clearly by the minister.  The poor guy spoke for 30-40 minutes and went absolutely nowhere.  I kept thinking, "I think I know where's he's trying to go, but I'm saved!  The unsaved people must be thoroughly confused by now."  After he spoke, he opened the floor, so to speak.  My dad was the third person up, and he gave the gospel in a very clear, concise way. Praise the Lord for that.  My cousin (the brother of the one who passed away) would have given the gospel, I believe; but was able to talk about something else since my dad had already done so.  He talked about different instances where God protected my cousin (pranks, accidents, cancer), and gave a lesson that he had learned from him: Don't sugar-coat stuff.  Tell it the way it is.  The cousin who died was very vocal about caring for his family, loving people, etc.; but he also told people when they were doing something wrong.

We're about to walk out the door to go witness in Orlando.  If you read this before 11 p.m. EST, pray for us!

How Busy Are You?

Take just a second and think about your day-to-day life. With the responsibilities that many people have today, there isn’t much time to stop and think. Our modern, civilized, up-to-date world leaves us very little time to ponder.

As I'm sure I've mentioned previously, our pastor is going through a series on the mind of God versus the mind of Man, as well as other verses on thinking, meditating, etc. Last night, we started looking at the verses in the Bible that refer to meditating.

According to Webster’s 1828 dictionary, here’s what the word meditate means:
  1. To dwell on any thing in thought; to contemplate; to study; to turn or revolve any subject in the mind; appropriately but not exclusively used of pious contemplation, or a consideration of the truths of religion.
  2. To intend; to have in contemplation.
  3. To think on; to revolve in the mind.

Joshua 1:8 says, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

What was the purpose of the meditation? “That thou mayest observe to do.” If we think on God’s word, we will be more likely to heed its commands.

Meeting the needs of our families (especially the father providing for his wife and children) is a biblical requirement. However, the Lord also tells us not to neglect our spiritual lives. As we’re running about, fulfilling all our responsibilities, let’s be certain to ask ourselves, “Is this the best use of my time?” “Is this going to matter in eternity?”

In order to be successful at something, some level of thought must be devoted to it. If your husband wants to be a successful businessman in order to provide for his family, he is going to have to devote some time to thinking about his business. If you want to be the best wife and mother in the world, you are going to have to ponder how you can best serve your family. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with either of those things. But, don’t we want to be the best Christians we can be, too? Have you been meditating on what the Bible commands Christians to do? Have I?

Psalm 1:2 says, “But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Is our delight in the law of the Lord? Is dwelling on the precious word of God one of the things that makes you happy?

Psalm 5:1: Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.

Have you ever been walking by a group of people talking and as soon as you walked by, the people stopped talking. Doesn’t make you feel very comfortable, does it? You begin to wonder, were they talking about me? Were they talking about my kids? My husband? Have we ever been guilty of the same thing? If we’re worried about that those people walking by my hear what we’re saying, we certainly need to stop and remember God is always listening to what we say and think!

This was a help to me, so I wanted to share it with you. There are battles different people deal with. There are probably very few of us who struggle with drinking or drugs; but there are people like that. This is something I would say we all struggle with: How do I get everything done and still keep my mind stayed on Jesus Christ?

Side note:  Why I don't capitalize the w in word when I'm referring to the Bible.

I thought some of you might be wondering.  In John 1, the Bible refers to Jesus Christ as the Word.  When the Bible refers to the words of God, the w is never upper case.  Thus, when I talk about the word of God, I don't capitalize it.  If I were to refer to Jesus Christ as the Word, I would capitalize it.

Exciting News

The principal of the private school where I recently interviewed called me today! She didn't come out and say, "you got the job." However, she did say that she wanted me to come in next Thursday afternoon to meet with the other third grade teacher to go over the curriculum and other issues. If she were not very interested, why would she be wasting her time, as well as the other teacher's? When she called to set up the initial interview, I started getting very excited. I tried to stop my excitement from building too quickly because I didn't want to be let down. I still don't want to count my chickens too early, but it's looking like I can at least get excited. Please keep praying about this situation!

The viewing today went pretty well. Everyone was civil, etc., so that was good. Tomorrow is the funeral, so please remember to pray for those who are lost. The preacher, as well as my dad, are going to be giving the gospel. Pray for them, as well.

On another note: being around various family members just made me so thankful that my parents are married to each other, saved, and doing their best to live for the Lord! There is so much baggage for those whose brothers and sisters have different parents, etc. I'm thankful that I don't know much about that! I'm also thankful that God is great and merciful and can change bad situations into good ones!

New Project

sweet peas

Yesterday, I started a new project.  When I'm a teacher (if I can find a job...), I want to give my students a rich array of experiences.  One of them being growing plants from seeds.  When my cousins and I were young, our grandfather always had some project for us.  One summer, we grew thousands of oak trees from acorns!  With time, they grew very well, and we were able to sell them and make quite a bit of money for youngsters. Since those summers of planting the acorns and tending to the seedlings, I haven't grown anything from a seed.  So, I'm giving it a try before I get a class of my own.  I planted sweet peas, daisies, baby's breath, and asters.  I tried Dixie cups (the red plastic ones) with wholes punched in the bottom for drainage, as well as an egg carton.  I want to figure out which would be the best flowers to try, and what container will work the best.  I also think it will be fun for my students to experiment with the types of seeds and containers, but I certainly need to know ahead of time which will work the best.

Happy Lady & Cousin's Funeral

David and I just returned from visiting a woman from church who is in a nursing home.  She's probably in her mid fifties to early sixties, dying of breast cancer.  She wanted us to come by to sing hymns with her.  She's trying to select the hymns to be sung at her funeral.  It's sad to think about planning one's own funeral, but she is so peaceful.  She has confidence in her Saviour, and she knows where she is headed when she dies.  Praise the Lord for that!

On another sad note, my cousin's viewing is tomorrow and the funeral is Friday.  The autopsy showed that he died of a massive heart attack. He was only 30 years old.  They also found a tumor on his pancreas. He was very sick in general, it appears.  There will be many unsaved people at the funeral; please pray that hearts will be soft and receptive to the gospel.

My dad called my aunt, and their conversation went very well.  My aunt was talking about how much easier it would be if she knew my cousin was in heaven.  Dad was able to tell her about the times he had witnessed to my cousin; my cousin said that he was saved, just not living right. I think she was comforted after her talk with my dad.

The Results Are In

The last poll asked, "What do you like to read about on people's blogs?"
The choices and results are as follows:
  • daily life - 100% want to read about daily life
  • church - 35% want to read about church
  • spiritual issues - 78% want to read about spiritual issues
  • humorous events - 78% want to read about humorous events
Keep in mind that people were allowed to select all answers that applied.

When I read a blog, I want to read a combination of all of these things. I know that people say a blog should have one specific topic, but not always necessary. I like reading about your daily lives, what is going on with your church family (who's getting saved, etc), spiritual triumphs or struggles, and funny things.  I just wanted to see if others agreed with me.

Please be sure to vote in the new poll!

Fried Brain = Lame Title

Today, like the other days in our four-day weekend, was wonderful...  around here, we like to extend birthdays for as long as possible... tonight, my family (parents and brother, aunt and uncle, cousins, and grandparents) came over for David's birthday get together.  Since we were gone all weekend, I didn't have time to make anything myself, so we had apple pies from Publix and a Boston creme pie from Walmart.  I only tried the apple pie; it was delicious!

About our trip:  It was wonderful!  We had so much fun, I can't even begin to describe it.  It was amazing to be able to do whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted.  There was no schedule we had to keep or any specific plans.  We just wanted to be together and have a fun time. We definitely succeeded on both counts.

On Friday, we woke up and ate breakfast at 8:30 (it was in a cute dining room with lots of forks and fine china).  Then we sat on the pier for a little while and just enjoyed the sunshine and the view.  Then, we went to a state park and walked on the boardwalk and beach.  We saw several turtles, lizards, and butterflies.  Later that morning, we walked around the historic downtown of New Smyrna.  David and I have a magnet collection (we buy one wherever we go), so we were able to buy one to add to the fridge... it's a beachy number with a place for a photo from this weekend (I already printed a picture and cropped it to fit in the little frame).  We did a ton of other things, too, but at the moment, they are not coming to me.  Friday night, we had a romantic dinner at a very nice restaurant, then we walked on the beach close to the spot where David proposed.

Saturday, we kept pretty much the same routine.  Woke up early & browsed around. Stopped at some parks.  Looked at the water.  That type stuff.  At one location, we saw dolphins and pelicans.  It was great! The pesky birds would fly to wherever the poor dolphins were and pester them. There were also these perky little fish that liked to jump out of the water.  David and I tried to get a picture, but were never successful.

So...  we're back home now.  We took 251 photos... I spared you.  There are only 60 in the slideshow from yesterday.  Today's pictures demonstrated the Browns' ability to be ridiculously silly.  I don't know what caused David to pretend like he was going to dive into the water, but I thought it was hysterical.  I took a picture, and he wanted to return the favor.

ADDED:  If you care to submit title suggestions, please feel free to do so. C:
